How to Download a Torrent.

First of all, what is a torrent?

A torrent is a file, or group of files that have been split into hundreds of individual pieces and organized by something called a torrent client (such as uTorrent, or BitTorrent). The benefit of breaking these files into pieces is that it allows the torrent client on your computer to download each piece of the torrent from difference sources (peers and seeds, we'll go over them later) simultaneously. Once you have downloaded every individual piece, the client puts the pieces back together to form the file that you originally intended to download.

How do I get the Torrent Client?

This part is really easy. The client we here at Awesome-101 like to use is called uTorrent. We find it is the fastest, easiest to use, and most reliable. You can download it for free from the uTorrent website. Simply follow the installation instructions and you'll be ready to download torrents in no time!

Okay so where do I find the torrent files?

Our favourite place to find torrents is thepiratebay.org. You can find torrents all over the internet, use our good friend Google with the keyword "torrent" and you'll find hundreds.
The file you will download off your website of choice will be called a "torrent file". This is not the actual torrent, it is simply the instructions that tell the torrent client which pieces to download and where to look. When it is finished, you have to open it in uTorrent or your client of choice and this will begin the download process of the torrent (the actual file that you're trying to aquire).
For clarification purposes, there are TWO downloads that must complete before your torrent is ready: the instructions (file extension=.torrent) which you will download off thepiratebay.org and the torrent itself, which will download in uTorrent or your client of choice.

Tips and tricks:

Always try to download the torrent file with the most seeders. What are seeders you ask? The number of seeds shown corresponding to each torrent is representative of how many people are finished the download and are actively uploading the pieces. The more seeds there are, the faster your download will go. A high number of seeds is also a good indication of the torrent's quality, the more seeds there are, the more established a torrent, the higher quality it is likely to be, and the smaller the chance of it having a virus. Peers (or Leechers) are people who have begun downloading, but have not yet finished obtaining all the pieces. Peers are neither bad nor good: on one hand, you can still download pieces from them (only the pieces they have finished downloading), on the other hand, you are competing with them to download the rest of the pieces from the seeders. thepiratebay.org has a feature that lets you sort your search results by the number of seeders, I highly recommend you do this.

Have fun!
